Save On Organic Groceries With Misfits Market

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

“Food deliveries are the best part of 2020”, my daughter joked last night. We haven’t been to one store since March and look forward to packages from Amazon in a way that channels the excitement of the Pony Express. Around March, I saw people massively stocking up on pantry items and found myself ordering food from independent vitamin companies that had a few staples. I also purchased cloth napkins. Fortunately, I’ve had my produce delivered from Misfits Market for about two years and found myself relying on their shipments more than ever. I even upgraded to two boxes per week, hoping to bring in more starchy vegetables to add substance to our diets until stores could restock.

Misfits Market is a company that rescues organic produce that is surplus or not the standard size or shape one would find in the supermarket. Carrots are not necessarily the mostly uniform tapered root vegetables found in a plastic bag. They can be thick with a few nubs on them. Just as tasty. In fact, cheaper tastes much better to me. While your apple may have the occasional parasitic twin, most of the produce looks no different than what I would normally purchase. I order two large boxes per week and have enough to share with an elderly neighbor. We used to get the produce picked out for us and that was a fun surprise but more recently, Misfits introduced the option of customizing the boxes and we like that much better. There are a few sections where you click on a specified number of choices and you won’t end up with beets or ginger, if that’s your preference. I purchase the large Madness boxes for $35 each, with a shipping rate of $4.50 per box. The site says $5.50 for shipping but I believe I live close to one of the warehouses. Speaking of shipping, the box comes with a large ice bag that can vary in brand but some have the instructions to pour the contents down the drain. Having clogged a drain with one, I recommend finding another way of disposing of the ice pack.

Customized box number one.

Because I customize, the value of the boxes can be hard to measure. Some weeks, there are different colors of organic sweet bell peppers to choose from. Those are some of the priciest items in the produce section at stores, as are the Asian pears my daughter likes. Not only can prices vary depending on where you live but I once made a master list of the best prices of each item from the supermarkets I shopped at the most and the differences between each market were significant. Now, I just eyeball what I received and at minimum, it slightly exceeds the price I would pay locally. No coupons to cut, no transportation costs, no added on shopping fees. I tried another subscription produce company that also sells additional dry goods and there was so much less food for the price that I unsubscribed after only one box. The good thing about Misfits is that I could go into my account and skip a week or as many weeks as I wanted to, so I could try this company. Any issue I have had with damaged or missing items is reimbursed without question. It’s shipped fresh perishable food on a massive scale; bumps happen. As long as it is resolved fairly, I’m happy.

More recently, Misfits Market has introduced dry goods such as coffee, spices, dried fruit, potato chips, olive oil, snacks and breakfast food. All at discounted prices. My Subscribe and Save from Amazon has not had sardines in stock for months, so I’m glad to be able to buy them from Misfits.

Customized Madness box number two. The greens on the bottom left are Napa cabbage. The red fruit above the potatoes on the bottom right are pears.

Misfits Market also has a referral program that knocks 25% off of the price of the product for you and the first box of the person you referred. For each person you refer, you get a 25% discount off of your order for up to 30 orders per calendar year. The best part is that if you order two boxes, you use a separate email account for each one and once you have used up your 30 discounts on one account, you can use the code from your other account and switch. I asked if this was okay and they consented but always check all of this information for the latest updates. Now, you may not have a blog but you likely have a Facebook page. Before you start feeling weird about soliciting friends, you’re not asking for anything. Spread out all of your produce, take a picture and tell how much you paid for it, leaving the discount code you are automatically given that’s located with your account information. Are your friends shy about asking you to buy their leggings, nail polish stickers or essential oils? You’re not asking anyone to like your business page or attend a webinar. You’re just sharing a picture where both of you could save on your groceries. The normal discount for referrals is 25% off your first box but for a limited time, Misfits is offering 30% off. The code to enter for your discount is COOKWME-LF6AZD It’s such an easy way to get great healthy food for a low price with shopping that’s done in a few minutes.
