Is It Worth It To Philosophize?
I just finished a book that told me what my problem is. Then it told me to stop doing it. Something about yoga, meditation. The Tao. It’s the New Age version of, “Doctor, it hurts when I do this.” Is it worth it to think about philosophical phenomenon? If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The people that came up with, or like to quote the answer that relies on the physiological interpretation of sound vibrations are probably pleased with themselves. I find other replies just as plausible. Even the unfancy ones. My own answer: I don’t…

5 Ways To Help With Too much Empathy
You’re in a car with someone who is in a bad mood. They’re not saying a word but you feel their misery so strongly that you would love to jump out. You’re watching television and that commercial with all of the scrawny dogs on a cold bare floor grips you as Sarah McLachlan sings “In The Arms of An Angel” for the kill shot. Do you often feel as if you’re going through someone else’s distress as if it were your own? While it is a great ability to feel the joys and sufferings of others, here are my top 5 ways to make your own feelings top priority. (Note,…

Summer Skin With Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s is known for classic as well as creative food at a decent price. It’s somewhat small for a supermarket, with a limited variety and fun seasonal items. That makes it great for people who want to get in and out without the paradox of choice (making no decision because there are too many choices.) Its tropical shirted staff does a great job of making it the happiest place on the strip mall. But have you tried their personal care products? I’ve tried several over the years. Here are a few that stood out among my collection. Note: Trader Joe’s does not offer online purchases but you can go…

Dispose Of A Crib Mattress For Only $700
I live in a condo that uses a management company . The management company has rules. These rules change from time to time. As a good citizen, I check in to make sure I am following these rules. When I decided to throw out a crib mattress that I had been using to pad something, I called the doorman to see if it was too big to leave with the larger trash items in the basement. “No problem.” he said. “Just leave a security deposit for $200 so the super can line the elevator with padding.” Fine, I know I get my money back. “And,” he added “Another $500 because…

Do You Believe In Soulmates?
I do, but……..I wouldn’t put much time into getting caught up in that thought. It leads to a long road of questions. Can we have more than one soulmate? Does finding one’s soulmate mean you’ll get together? Should we cross moral boundaries to be with each other because we’re “meant to be”? Does being with a soulmate equate to living out the rest of your lives together? If someone is your soulmate, should you sacrifice more to be with them? Is their happiness more of a priority than a partner who isn’t your soulmate? Think about all of the other more productive things you could be doing than thinking about…

Do Silk Pillowcases Work?
We could all use a little luxury. I’ve been obsessed with beauty tips since I discovered red lipstick a a small child. As time passed, I became more focused on healthy skin and hair. I’ve seen beauty fanatics talk about sleeping on your back to prevent wrinkles. Even my chiropractor said it is the best position to sleep in for spinal health. Yet, there’s something about rolling over onto my side that really knocks me out when I have a hard time falling asleep. I’d heard about using silk pillowcases to prevent wrinkles and to keep hair from becoming a tangled, matted mess but there were two reasons I didn’t…

Decluttering And What’s Important In Your World
I’m in a business building program where one of the steps involves clearing out physical and electronic clutter. This has been an ongoing project for many years and now that my kids are older, it’s more of a reality. I’ve done Flylady’s fill up a box with items you no longer want each day for 40 days. I’ve read that book about sparking joy. I’ve just always felt more relaxed in homes that are clean and organized and wanted that for myself. So I took the week to go full force. Emails and files were probably the most time consuming and I’m still not done. A couple of days later,…

Non Alcoholic Moscow Mule
I really belong at the kid’s table. We don’t have to eat what’s served and just want to laugh and have a good time. Grownups just complain. And drink alcohol. It’s an Emperor Has No Clothes perspective for me. I don’t get why people like the taste. Buckets to spit wine in; this, I get. Yes, I’ve had “good” wine. Yes, it was less bad. I’ve tried liking alcohol. Straight drinks, mixed ones. Beer is most undelicious. It’s just as well that it never stuck because I no longer have much of a tolerance for it . I don’t know if it’s from lack of practice or all of the…
