Decluttering And What’s Important In Your World

I’m in a business building program where one of the steps involves clearing out physical and electronic clutter. This has been an ongoing project for many years and now that my kids are older, it’s more of a reality. I’ve done Flylady’s fill up a box with items you no longer want each day for 40 days. I’ve read that book about sparking joy. I’ve just always felt more relaxed in homes that are clean and organized and wanted that for myself. So I took the week to go full force. Emails and files were probably the most time consuming and I’m still not done. A couple of days later, I got a call from someone that happened to be in the area and it was nice to feel good about the state of my apartment. He asked to see an old check register and I knew exactly where it was, having handled it two days prior.

I live in a real home. Gym equipment is in the living room because I use it often. Toothbrushes are out on top of the bathroom vanity because it’s better to air dry them. The thought of having a collection of items makes me itch but both of my daughters collect things that they are passionate about accruing. It’s about not being weighed down by your stuff. I don’t buy something unless I need it, love it or just plain old want it. That leaves a lot of clutter back in the store, without being purchased.

A couple of months ago we had an emergency evacuation of our building. I grabbed my kids, keys were by the door and we ran. No cell, purse, laptop or papers. Thankfully, everything was fine but as we stood out in the rain, I looked up at my apartment. I wanted a nice place to stay, I didn’t want my kids to go through the ordeal of losing their possessions and I would miss old photos but I realized I didn’t care much about anything in my apartment. I renovated it to my taste and still love it but I could start over. Maybe I’d feel freer. I wish everyone joy, a happy new year and the free feeling of being weightless.
