Non Alcoholic Moscow Mule

I really belong at the kid’s table. We don’t have to eat what’s served and just want to laugh and have a good time. Grownups just complain. And drink alcohol. It’s an Emperor Has No Clothes perspective for me. I don’t get why people like the taste. Buckets to spit wine in; this, I get. Yes, I’ve had “good” wine. Yes, it was less bad. I’ve tried liking alcohol. Straight drinks, mixed ones. Beer is most undelicious. It’s just as well that it never stuck because I no longer have much of a tolerance for it . I don’t know if it’s from lack of practice or all of the cleanses I’ve done but a half a glass of Moscato D’Asti and the room starts to move.

I do kind of like a drink with something extra. Club soda with cranberry and grapefruit juice. Even plain club soda with lime. I love nonalcoholic pina coladas, which is surprising because it’s touristy enough to annoy me.

It’s a little known fact that the pineapple originated in Russia. As did ginger. And limes. And mules. I could Google the history of the Moscow Mule but that is boring. I do know that the alcoholic version contains vodka and mint, making this a distant relative of the original. Some other non alcoholic versions call for a simple syrup, which is boiled sugar water but that already makes me lose interest. I wouldn’t even Pin a recipe like that.

When finding a substitute for alcohol, there should be some element to make sure it doesn’t turn out watery. I like the combination of pineapple and ginger. Vita Coco makes a good pineapple coconut water that’s not cloudy, like the pineapple juice found in cans. The Reed’s Extra ginger beer is very overpowering, where it’s almost bitter, so if you’re not into ginger that much, I’d go with their plain ginger beer or the one Trader Joe’s manufactures.

I rarely do recipes and when I do, I even more rarely follow them. I follow enough rules. Here’s the super simple recipe:

I find this a very nice drink that we enjoy on weekdays, especially during the hot weather but this would fit the bill for something sparkly to celebrate the new year.
